The Best Things to Do in Tahlequah with Kids

One of the things I loved most about this area is how balanced the trip felt.

You can spend the morning hiking or floating the river, and your afternoons exploring museums, local shops, and great food. Here’s my top recommendations on what to do in Tahlequah with kids.

Float the Illinois River

Floating the Illinois River is an absolute must-do during summer. Your kids will love jumping in and out of the raft, searching for wildlife, and splashing on the sandbars. The water is so clear and cool – perfect for a hot summer day!

We booked our float through War Eagle Resort, and it ended up being our family’s favorite experience of the entire weekend. We chose the shorter route, and it took us about 3.5 hours to finish, but you can definitely spend longer depending on how much time you spend at each stop.

Good to know:

  • Float during the week if you are looking for family-friendly
  • Bring water shoes
  • Life jackets provided
  • Pack snacks & water for the trip

Spend a Day on Lake Tenkiller

If your family loves lake days, you’ll definitely want to carve out time for Lake Tenkiller.

This lake is incredibly beautiful, and it’s a can’t miss spot when visiting Tahlequah.

We rented our boat through Burnt Cabin Marina and spent the entire afternoon exploring the lake. We loved boating to Goat Island and watching the baby goats run and play. We even boated into Dockside Pizza for lunch.

You can also rent tubes from the marina if you’re looking for a bit more excitement.

Hike the Sparrow Hawk Trail

This hike is epic! The trail is perfect for adventurous kids – not too long or difficult. It’s 3.4 miles roundtrip, but you can easily turn back halfway after you get to the viewpoints. It has moderate elevation change and some loose rocks along the trail, so make sure to wear proper footwear.

The trail winds through the forest before opening up to sweeping views over the Illinois River, and the payoff at the overlook is absolutely worth it.

Tips:

  • Bring plenty of water in summer
  • The trail is mostly shaded, but I would still recommend visiting early in the day to avoid the heat
  • Bring tick repellent
  • Keep an eye out for the scenic overlooks about halfway through the trail – they are a bit hidden

Sequoyah State Park

This state park definitely packs a punch! Just 30 minutes outside of Tahlequah, this is the perfect spot for some outdoor adventures.

Make sure to check out Three Forks Nature Center and meet all of their furry animal friends – beavers, owls, foxes, snakes and more! They offer free daily animal feedings, ranger led activities and seasonal programs. Check out their Facebook page for to most up to date schedule.

Cherokee National History Museum

One of the things that makes Tahlequah so unique is its deep Cherokee history and culture. Located inside the beautifully restored Cherokee National Capitol building, the Cherokee National History Museum does an incredible job of bringing Cherokee history and culture to life in a way that feels engaging and approachable for families.

Through interactive exhibits, artifacts, and storytelling, you learn about the resilience, traditions, and history of the Cherokee people. It’s one of the best places in Tahlequah to add educational value to your trip while still keeping kids interested and engaged.

Hunter’s Home

This living history museum gives visitors a glimpse into 1800s Cherokee life and is such an interesting stop if your family enjoys history. Touring the historic plantation-style home gives you a chance to step back in time and learn about one of the most important figures in Cherokee Nation history, and see what life looked like living during this era.

Cherokee National Prison Museum

The Cherokee National Prison Museum is one of the more unique historical sites in Tahlequah and offers a really interesting look into the Cherokee justice system during the 1800s. Housed inside the original national prison building, the museum features exhibits about law enforcement, crime, and life within the Cherokee Nation during that time period.
