Conveniently located along I-80, Kearney is often thought of as a quick overnight stop on a road trip—but after spending a long weekend here, we discovered it’s a destination worth exploring all on its own.
From interactive museums and outdoor adventures to unique local restaurants, Kearney offers the perfect mix of activities for families traveling with kids of all ages.
Here’s exactly how to spend a long weekend exploring Kearney Nebraska.
Day 1: Discover Downtown Kearney & Splash into Your Weekend
Start at the Kearney Visitors Bureau
One of our favorite ways to begin exploring a new destination is by stopping at the local visitor center, and Kearney’s is a great first stop.
The friendly staff can point you toward local events happening during your visit, recommend restaurants, and help you discover hidden gems around town. It’s also a great place to pick up maps and brochures before beginning your adventure.
There’s a great exhibit featuring the famous Sandhill Cranes that migrate through Kearney each spring, and you can learn more about this amazing event, or even create your own crane while you’re here.
Explore the Kearney Area Children’s Museum
If you’re traveling with kids, the Kearney Area Children’s Museum is the perfect way to kick off your weekend.
Filled with tons of hands-on exhibits that encourage creativity, learning, and imaginative play, it’s the kind of museum where your kids will easily spend several hours playing and exploring.
From pretend play areas like a kid sized grocery store, vet’s clinic and real life ambulance, to interactive STEM exhibits like milking a dairy cow – there are plenty of opportunities for kids of all ages.
Plus it’s a great indoor option if you’re visiting during hot summer afternoons or cooler months.
Check Into Crowne Plaza Kearney
One of my kids favorite parts of our trip to Kearney was staying at the Crowne Plaza Kearney. The rooms are modern and comfortable, and the hotel is centrally located, which makes it perfect for exploring the city. Not to mention the onsite dining options, which make it super convenient for families.
But the best part is the amazing indoor water park! It has multiple pools, a large hot tub, splash area and full sized water slides – perfect to entertain kids of all ages.
After a morning of sightseeing, we spent the afternoon splashing in the pools and racing down the water slides.
Dinner in Downtown Kearney
When dinner rolls around, you have plenty of great options.
If you’re looking for a relaxing evening at the hotel, Fyre Modern Grill offers an upscale yet family-friendly menu.
If you’d rather explore downtown, head into the heart of Kearney where you’ll find tons of locally owned restaurants, breweries, and cafés.
We checked out The Toasted Goat, which offered a great selection of unique sandwiches and bar food.
Spend the Evening at Yanney Heritage Park
After dinner, make your way to Yanney Heritage Park, one of Kearney’s most incredible outdoor spaces.
This beautiful park offers something for every member of the family.
Make sure to climb the observation tower for panoramic views across the park, rent paddle boats or kayaks and explore the lake, cast a line, enjoy the playgrounds or splash pad, or take an evening walk along the paved trails.
This outdoor space has so much to offer, and is the perfect spot to end your first day in Kearney.
Day 2: Nature, History & Family Fun
Coffee at Java Junction
Start your morning with coffee and smoothies from Java Junction, the cutest little drive through coffee shop that has a huge menu with tons of coffee, smoothie, tea and breakfast options.
The smoothies were a big hit with my kids – perfect for a quick breakfast on the go!
Explore Rowe Sanctuary
After breakfast, head to Rowe Sanctuary just outside of Kearney.
Located along the Platte River, the sanctuary is best known for hosting one of the world’s largest sandhill crane migrations each spring, but it’s definitely worth a visit throughout the rest of the year as well!
Before heading to the trails to explore the outdoor areas, make sure to spend some time inside the visitor center learning about the Platte River ecosystem, local wildlife, and ongoing conservation efforts.
We were lucky enough to visit during one of their special programs – a Nature Field Day.
During our visit, we went birdwatching, learned about native prairie plants, explored local habitats, and even tried freshwater “tide pooling” to discover tiny aquatic creatures like crawdads, fish, frogs and more. It was such a fun experience, and I’m pretty sure my kids would have stayed there all day trying to catch more critters in their nets!

Lunch in Downtown Kearney
After your morning at Rowe Sanctuary, head back to downtown Kearney for lunch.
I highly recommend checking out The Knot Shop, where you can get some really unique pretzel flavors, like PB&J or the JuggerKnot.
After lunch, stop by The Golden Spoon Scoop Shop for a sweet treat.
If you have extra time, make sure to wander downtown and browse a few local shops.
Visit The Archway Museum
No visit to Kearney Nebraska would be complete without stopping at The Archway museum.
Spanning across Interstate 80, this one-of-a-kind museum tells the story of westward expansion and the travelers who helped shape America, from pioneers traveling the Oregon Trail to the development of the Lincoln Highway and Interstate 80.
They offer a free audio tour of the museum, which makes it fun and interactive for both kids and adults.
Big Apple Fun Center
Wrap up your day in Kearney with some classic family fun at Big Apple Fun Center.
Enjoy go-karts, bowling, arcade games, mini golf, laser tag and more at this great family spot.
They even offer a full lunch/dinner menu, so you can truly spend the day here!
Day 3: A Day Trip to Minden
One of the best things about staying in Kearney is all the nearby communities perfect for exploring.
Just a short drive away, the charming town of Minden makes a fantastic day trip from Kearney.
Step Back in Time at Pioneer Village
Start your morning at Pioneer Village, one of Nebraska’s most fascinating museums.
With dozens of restored, historic buildings and an incredible collection of historic automobiles, tractors, household items, and pioneer artifacts, it’s easy to spend several hours wandering through the exhibits.
History comes alive here, and it truly is a fascinating collection of the past. It was interesting to see the old covered wagons that pioneers made the trek out west in, models of the first ever airplanes, and compare kitchens from the 1800’s all the way up until the 1980’s.
Tour the Historic Minden Opera House
Next, stop by the beautifully restored Minden Opera House.
Take a peek inside the building’s history while enjoying its beautifully preserved architecture.

Experience the Kearney County Fair
If your visit happens to coincide with fair season, don’t miss the Kearney County Fair.
County fairs are such a fun way to experience the small-town Nebraska feel.
My kids loved meeting all the farm animals, cooling off with snow cones, and even trying something completely new—goat yoga! Safe to say hanging out with the cutest goats and sheep was a hit with them.
It was the perfect way to wrap up our weekend before heading home.
Where to Stay During Your Visit to Kearney Nebraska
I highly recommend staying at Crowne Plaza Kearney.
Its convenient location, comfortable rooms, and indoor water park made it an excellent home base for exploring everything Kearney has to offer. Having the built-in waterpark was the perfect spot to spend the afternoon or evening after a full day of sightseeing.
