During our recent trip to Maui as a family of 5, we choose what I believe is quite possibly the best family resort in Maui for our stay – they Hyatt Regency Maui.

Located on the southern end of Ka’anapali Beach, the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa is the perfect home base for families with kids of all ages. From the amazing pool playground that features a 150-foot lava tube waterslide, the resident African penguins and other exotic birds in the lobby, and prime access to the Ka’anapali Beachwalk, it checks nearly every box for families visiting Maui.

But the real question – is it worth booking for your family’s Maui vacation? In this complete guide and honest review, I’m going to break down everything you need to know before your Maui trip to help you decide if this is the right spot for you.

Hyatt Regency Maui At a Glance

  • Location: Southern tip of Ka’anapali Beach (West Maui), roughly 45 minutes from Kahului Airport (OGG).
  • Vibe: Expansive, relaxed, and active oceanfront resort with an open-air Polynesian-inspired layout.
  • Best Suited For: Families with toddlers through pre-teens looking for an amenity-rich resort close to some of the top sights on the island.
  • Standout Amenities: 40-acre oceanfront grounds, 6 free-form pool areas, 150-foot lava tube waterslide, on-site wildlife, on-site Luau, and direct access to the Ka’anapali Beachwalk.

The Location

The resort sits right from the the start of Ka’anapali Beach.

One of the best features of the Hyatt Regency Maui is the paved, stroller-friendly Ka’anapali Beachwalk running directly in front of the resort.

A 15-minute walk north along the path brings you directly into Whalers Village, the primary outdoor shopping and dining hub of Ka’anapali. This means you can walk to lunch, do some shopping, grab shave ice, or sit down for dinner without fighting the traffic or parking.

The Beach Setup

The beach directly fronting the Hyatt is scenic, but the strip of sand here is narrower compared to the wider stretches found further north near Black Rock.

  • Ocean Conditions: Water conditions can vary by season, but in general the beach directly in front of the Hyatt Regency Maui is not great for swimming.
  • For gentle, calm wading with small kids, walk 10–15 minutes north along the path toward the central stretch of Ka’anapali or drive 10 minutes north to Baby Beach in Lahaina for completely flat, reef-protected shallows.

The Pools

If your kids prioritize pool days over almost everything else, the Hyatt Regency Maui delivers. The pool complex spans six distinct areas connected by bridges, waterfalls, and grottos.

1. The Keiki (Kids) Lagoon

Designed specifically for toddlers and young elementary kids, the Keiki Lagoon features:

  • A zero-depth entry sandy beach area where little ones can splash safely.
  • Water fountains and interactive splash toys.
  • A dedicated miniature lava tube slide tailored for younger kids who aren’t ready for the main slide.
  • Life jackets available poolside on a complimentary first-come basis.
  • Plenty of seating options and a nearby hot tub for parents

2. The Main Free-Form Pool

If you have bigger kids, you will most likely be spending your time at the main pool. This massive pool feature:

  • A half-acre free-form pool with tropical rock features, waterfalls and direct oceanfront access.
  • Poolside dining available at the casual island-inspired resturaunt, Umalu.
  • Cabanas and tents available for rent

Parent Tip for Pool Chairs: Like most popular Hawaiian resorts, pool loungers fill quickly. While staff enforce a policy against saving chairs with unattended towels for hours, prime shaded spots near the Keiki Lagoon fill up by 8:30 AM. If shade is essential for a napping toddler, claim your spot early.

Resident Animals on the Property

One of the best parts of the Hyatt Regency Maui for kids is the resort’s permanent resident wildlife collection, managed by an on-site animal care team.

  • The African Black-Footed Penguins: Located right in the open-air atrium of the lobby, the resort hosts a colony of penguins. Daily feedings take place every morning around 9:30 AM. It is an easy, free activity that your kids will look forward to.
  • Exotic Birds: Walking through the grounds, you can spot black and white swans and parrots stationed both in the open-air lobby and among the resort grounds.
  • Guided Wildlife Tours: The resort also offers complimentary morning wildlife tours led by staff, sharing facts about the resident birds, ducks, and ocean life. Check the daily activities schedule via the Hyatt app upon check-in.

Rooms & Suites: What Setup Works Best for Families?

Enough about the amenities – now let’s talk about the sleeping arrangements.

Room Configurations

The standard guest rooms feel nice and spacious, offering enough room to set up a pack-and-play without blocking walkways.

  • Most standard setups feature either One King bed with a pull-out queen sofa sleeper or Two Queen beds.
  • We are a family of 5, and chose the King + sleeper sofa and it worked great for us. The two adults and 4 year old shared the king sized bed, and my big kids shared the queen-sized pull out sofa.
  • Every room includes a private lanai with outdoor chairs, mini-fridge, coffeemaker, and TV. Note that microwaves are not offered here.

Traveling with a baby? Make sure to bring a Slumber Pod to help everyone get a good nights sleep! It’s my #1 must have item when traveling with a baby!

Dining at Hyatt Regency Maui

Obviously one of the most convenient parts of staying at a resort with kids is the option for on-site dining.

  • Swan Court: The resort’s flagship buffet breakfast. It’s pretty amazing dining next to the open lagoon while watching swans and koi swim past. While the onsite location is convenient, pricing is reflective of resort rates. Kids aged 5 and under typically eat free with a paying adult. Open for breakfast (6:30 – 11am) and dinner (5:00 – 9:00 pm)
  • ‘Ūmalu: The poolside eatery and bar is perfect for casual lunches without pulling kids out of their swimsuits. They offer standard family favorites like fish tacos, poke bowls, burgers, chicken tenders and fresh fruit. You can also order to your room.
  • Japengo: This is the signature Pacific Rim and sushi restaurant overlooking the ocean. Best reserved for an early dinner seating (5:00–5:30 PM) if dining with younger kids, or saved for a parents’ night out. Reservations highly recommended.
  • Drums of the Pacific Lu’au: Hyatt Regency Maui hosts its own traditional lu’au on-site. The convenience of walking down from your room rather than driving home late after a lu’au show is a major advantage for families with tired toddlers.

Other Onsite Amenities

Here are some of the other on-site activities offered at the Hyatt Regency Maui that are great for families:

  • Drums of the Pacific Luau: On-site, kid friendly luau with dinner buffet and open bar
  • Free lei and kukui nut bracelet making classes: Book before your arrival or day of, depending on availability
  • Free daily outdoor fitness classes: Yoga, pilates, boot camp and more.
  • On-site, full service spa
  • Pickle ball courts
  • Mermaid class and children’s diving introductory class

Practical Logistics & Parent Survival Tips

  1. Download the World of Hyatt App: Use it for mobile room keys, checking daily wildlife feeding times, and reviewing pool towel station hours.
  2. Hit the Grocery Store First: Before driving across the island to Ka’anapali, stop at the Target, Costco, or Safeway near Kahului Airport (OGG) to stock up on bottled water, breakfast items, kid-friendly snacks, and reef-safe sunscreen. The in-room mini-fridge makes it easy to make your own sandwiches and fruit for lunch to save some money on resort food.
  3. Bring Your Own Snorkel Gear: While the resort offers rental gear for a fee, buying a budget set at Costco or bringing your own pays for itself immediately. We brought this set for our kids and it was great!
  4. Nighttime Stargazing: The Hyatt hosts a renowned rooftop astronomy program called the Tour of the Stars using high-powered telescopes. It requires advanced reservations – book here!

Final Verdict: Is It Worth It?

The Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa remains one of the top choices on Maui for families who value contained convenience and family friendly amenities. If you want a vacation where you can unpack once, let the kids bounce between waterslides and penguin feedings, stroll along the beachside path to dinner, and enjoy shave ice anytime you want, this spot delivers the ultimate Hawaiian resort experience for families.
