The Best Kid-Friendly Hikes in Cuyahoga Valley National Park
Unpopular opinion: Cuyahoga Valley National Park is one of the most underrated National Parks in the entire country. And the best part? It’s incredibly family friendly.
Maybe it’s the way the entire park feel adventurous without being overwhelming. Or how there’s always something to discover—waterfalls, bridges, creeks, wildlife—but without miles up uphill hiking to find it. And there are some truly amazing kid friendly hikes in Cuyahoga Valley National Park, which make it the perfect place to spend the weekend as a family.
This is one of those rare national parks where you don’t have to miss out on the cool stuff to keep it “kid-friendly”.
If you’re planning a visit and wondering which trails are actually doable (and enjoyable) with kids, here are the ones I recommend!
Brandywine Gorge Trail
Best for: Waterfalls + Easy Access
This short loop leads you to the park’s most iconic waterfall, Brandywine Falls, and it’s one of those places that feels impressive without requiring much effort. Be aware that there are lots of stairs though, which make it not-so stroller friendly.
The boardwalk-style trail makes it easy for kids, and there are multiple viewing platforms so you can view the falls from different levels.
Why kids love it:
There’s a clear destination (the waterfall), and it doesn’t take long to get there—which keeps everyone happy.
Good to know:
Go early if you can. This is one of the most popular spots in the park. And while the parking lot fills up, it also empties fast since the trail is pretty short.

Ledges Trail
Best for: Adventure + Exploring
This trail is where the park starts to feel really fun for kids. Just over 2 miles, this is one that’s perfect for kids of all ages, and a must do in my opinion!
The trail winds through massive rock formations, narrow passageways, and shady forest paths. It feels more like exploring than hiking, and I can almost guarantee you will hear zero complains during this trail.
Why kids love it:
Climbing, squeezing through rocks, and discovering hidden spaces along the trail – it feels like a true adventure!
Good to know:
There are some uneven sections, so sturdy shoes are a must.

Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail
Best for: Biking + Strollers
If you need something easy, flat, and flexible, this is it.
The Towpath Trail runs through the park and is perfect for biking, scooters, or even just a casual walk with a stroller. The entire trail goes on for several miles, so just go as far as you’d like and turn around when you’re done.
Why kids love it:
They can move at their own pace—bike, run, stop, repeat.
Good to know:
You don’t have to commit to the full trail. Just pick a section and go as far as you want.
Blue Hen Falls Trail
Best for: Short Waterfall Hike
This is a quieter alternative to Brandywine Falls and a great option if you’re looking for something a little less crowded.
The hike is short, manageable, and leads to a smaller waterfall tucked into the forest. Plus it starts from the Boston Mills Visitor Center, which makes it a great trail to tack on after your visit there.
Why kids love it:
It feels like discovering a hidden spot, plus who doesn’t love a waterfall.
Good to know:
Keep going a little bit farther to Buttermilk Falls.
Beaver Marsh Boardwalk
Best for: Wildlife + Easy Walking
If your kids are animal lovers, this is one of the best spots in the park to spot wildlife! The boardwalk takes you out over the marsh, where you can peep turtles, birds, and sometimes even beavers if you’re lucky.
Why kids love it:
Wildlife spotting always feels like a game of iSpy.
Good to know:
Bring binoculars if you have them—it makes it even more fun!
Boston Run Trail
Best for: Longer, But Still Doable Hikes
If your family is looking for something a little longer, this loop is a great step up. Just over 3 miles with minimal elevation gain, this is a fun trail with decent shade, a footbridge and a couple small waterfalls.
It’s still manageable, but offers more of a challenge.
Why kids love it:
It feels like a “real hike” without being too difficult.
