Where to Stay Near Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge (Camping + Family-Friendly Options)
One of our favorite spring getaways is a visit to the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. While it could be done in a day trip, staying overnight turns it from a quick visit into something that feels like a real connection with nature.
And if you’re a parent like us, you know that where you stay can have a big impact on your trip.
So here are some different lodging options for your visit to the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, including my top recommendation and where we like to stay when we visit!
Camping at Doris Campground: The Full Experience
If you want to feel fully immersed in the refuge, this is it.
Doris Campground is simple, but that’s part of the charm. You’re surrounded by mountains, open skies, beautiful trees and tons of space for your kids to roam and explore.

Nearby Cabins and Vacation Rentals
If camping isn’t your thing (or you just want a little more comfort), there are plenty of cabins and rentals just outside the refuge.
These are perfect if:
- You’re traveling with younger kids
- You want AC in the summer
- You prefer a softer landing after a full day outdoors
You still get the experience, you just come back to a bed instead of a tent.
Here’s several great options you can check out.
Hotels in Lawton, Oklahoma
For the most convenience, staying in nearby Lawton gives you easy access to restaurants, grocery stores, and everything you might need. There are some great budget friendly options — check them out here.
It’s about a 20–25 minute drive to the refuge, making it a great base if you want flexibility.
What I Recommend for Families (and our favorite place to stay!)
If you really want to connect with nature and make this a weekend to remember, I highly recommend camping. There’s something about waking up in the middle of the refuge, hearing the quiet, and stepping straight into nature that changes the entire experience.
