Today, it remains a must-visit destination for travelers looking to explore Nebraska’s stunning landscapes and deep historical roots. Whether spending time exploring Western Nebraska or just passing through, Scottsbluff National Monument should definitely be on your must visit list! And believe it or not, it’s a great place for kids!

Tips for visiting:

Start at the Visitor Center

Learn about the history of the site, view museum exhibits, and watch a short film about the Oregon Trail. Don’t miss a Ranger led learning session, or grabbing your Jr. Ranger booklet to earn your badge.

Drive or hike to the Summit

The Summit Road is a must for incredible views, but hiking provides a more immersive experience. The 1.6 mile Saddle trail, rated difficult, has amazing views and takes you through an awesome tunnel. Or drive the 1.6 mile Summit Road for scenic views and overlooks.

Plan for the Midwest weather

Western Missouri is hot and sunny in the summer months. Come prepared with lots of water, sunscreen, and hats. Plan to visit early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the peak sun. This monument is open year round, and shoulder season will provide some amazing weather.

Watch for wildlife

There is lots of wildlife that lives at Scotts Bluff, including prairie dogs, pronghorn and bighorn sheep. Make sure to stay on trail, because this prairie is home to rattlesnakes as well.

Visit Nearby Attractions

Combine your trip with a visit to Chimney Rock or Agate Fossil Beds for a full day (or longer) of adventure. Be aware that there is no dining options inside Scotts Bluff National Monument, but the town of Scotts Bluff has several places to eat.

If Scotts Bluff National Monument isn’t on your Nebraska bucket list, you should definitely add it! It’s the perfect mix of nature and history, and is a fun place to visit for every age group.
