A Weekend of Togetherness: Our Family’s KOA Camping Getaway

There’s something special about stepping away from the hustle of daily life and settling into the simple rhythm of a weekend outdoors with your family. We recently spent a few days at the Oklahoma City East KOA Holiday a few hours from our home and it was the perfect blend of comfort, adventure, and connection. As an outdoorsy family, we are always looking for new adventures that fuel our love for the outdoors, but also help us slow down and enjoy the little moments in this crazy phase of life, and I have to say that our weekend at KOA was just that. Thanks to Kampgrounds of America for hosting us! #KOAPartner
We stayed in a cozy cabin that felt like our own little home in the woods. With a full kitchen and sleeping room for six, it made camping with littles easy and stress-free. We didn’t have to bring towels or linens, or worry about keeping our cooler full of ice. I loved having modern conveniences close at hand, but still feeling surrounded by nature. Waking up to birdsong and the smell of pine trees after a good night sleep in a real bed? Yes, please.
I spent the mornings sipping coffee on the porch swing while my kids hunted for bugs and played hide and seek. My husband was even able to get a couple of hours of work done thanks to the great Wi-Fi at the campground. The kids wasted no time diving into the pool; lots of laughter and cannonballs were had by all.

We spent the afternoon exploring the campground, and found some great hiking trails that were so fun to explore. Lots of games were played around the picnic table, and the kids had a blast running around playing tag and hide-and-seek. There was a great playground right by our cabin, and they made quick friends with the other kids. I got to catch up on a book I’ve been meaning to finish, and my husband and I enjoyed a glass of wine and some quality conversation while the kids played.
We cooked dinner over the campfire as a family and enjoyed our meal surrounded by the peaceful sounds of nature. We couldn’t forget s’mores, which of course ended with sticky fingers and chocolate-covered cheeks. As the sun went down, we grabbed some cheap flashlights for a game of flashlight tag, and then headed on an after dark walk, letting the kids and their flashlights lead the way. Hearing their giggles echo through the trees and watching them chase after fireflies was absolutely a core memory made.
Then we cozied up in our cabin for some nighttime reading and lots of snuggles. And honestly, that was the magic of the trip. The space to be present. The laughter. The teamwork involved in building a fire or cleaning up after a picnic. The quiet moments watching the stars from our porch, or listening to the cicada’s song.
There’s a beautiful kind of camaraderie that happens when you spend time outdoors. Not just within your family, but with the other families, too. Kids make fast friends on the playground. Neighbors wave hello as they walk their dogs or grill dinner. There’s a shared sense that we’re all here for the same thing; fresh air, connection, and a little adventure.
If you’re craving more time together as a family, I can’t recommend a KOA weekend enough. You can do as much or as little as you want. Play all day or take it slow. Cook over the fire, or in your kitchen. The beauty is in the balance, and in the chance to make those memories you know you won’t forget.
We left tired, happy, and already planning our next KOA adventure. Because at the end of the day, it’s not just a campground. It’s a place where family bonds grow stronger, laughter comes easy, and joy lives around every picnic table.
