Stop #1: Bridal Veil Falls
Kick off your waterfall adventure with one of Spearfish Canyon’s most iconic sights. Bridal Veil Falls is located just a few miles into the canyon, right off the highway. There’s a designated pull-off where you can park and take in the cascading water as it tumbles 60 feet down the limestone cliffs.
It’s a quick stop, but it sets the stage for the beauty that’s to come. If you’re visiting in summer, you might spot rock climbers scaling the cliffs nearby!
If you’re feeling adventurous, you can climb down the overlook and cross the creek to the base of the waterfall. It is a bit wet and slippery, so make sure to have good shoes, but so much fun to stand underneath the sprays and take in the epic view!
Stop #2: Devil’s Bathtub
Ready for a bit more adventure? The trail to Devil’s Bathtub is one of the most popular hikes in Spearfish Canyon. It’s about 1.5 miles out-and-back, with creek crossings that kids usually find to be the highlight of the trek. At the end, you’ll discover a natural waterslide carved into the rock with a swirling pool below.
On hot summer days, you’ll see people splashing, swimming, and even sliding into the chilly mountain water. Bring sturdy water shoes and prepare to get wet.
Stop #3: Spearfish Falls (a.k.a. Spearfish Canyon Falls)
Next, head to Spearfish Falls, located behind the Latchstring Inn in the little town of Savoy. A short, 1.5 mile family-friendly trail winds through the canyon floor to reveal one of the most picturesque waterfalls in the Black Hills.
This trail is well maintained and stroller friendly, and is great for little legs. We even saw several deer hiding in the trees here! You can also view the falls from the upper observation deck back at the edge of the restaurant parking lot if you don’t feel like hiking.
Stop #4: Roughlock Falls
Finish your Spearfish Canyon waterfall tour with a grand finale at Roughlock Falls. This multi-tiered waterfall is one of the most spectacular in South Dakota, framed by lush greenery and dramatic canyon walls.
A paved trail and boardwalk make it easy for families to reach the viewing platforms, and there are picnic areas nearby if you want to end your day with a picnic. This was my favorite of all the waterfalls, so definitely don’t miss this one!
After you view the main falls, head back to the parking lot and wander along the creek to find several other smaller waterfalls and pools that are perfect for kids to play and explore.
