A Fall Weekend in Omaha With Kids
There is something about a fall getaway in Omaha that makes it especially fun for a family getaway.
The temperatures are cool enough to enjoy the day outside, the trees are starting to turn shades of red and gold, and there are pumpkin patches, apple orchards, seasonal treats, and plenty of family-friendly attractions to fill a weekend.
We enjoyed a wonderful fall weekend in Omaha with the kids last October, and our itinerary was the perfect mix of outdoor adventure, exploring the city, seasonal activities, and some delicious fall treats.
From climbing through the trees at TreeRush Adventures to bobbing between Nebraska and Iowa, exploring the incredible Kiewit Luminarium, and spending an entire afternoon at Vala’s Pumpkin Patch, this is how I would plan the perfect fall weekend in Omaha with kids.
Friday: TreeRush Adventures
If you’re arriving in Omaha Friday afternoon or evening, I recommend starting your weekend with a little adventure.
Head to TreeRush Adventures, an aerial adventure park where you can climb, balance, zipline, and make your way through obstacle courses high up in the trees.
And during the fall, the experience gets even better. The forest gets a spooky makeover, and is filled with jack-o-lanterns, Halloween scenes and plenty of fall colors.
TreeRush has courses designed for different ages and abilities, so families can choose an adventure that feels appropriate for everyone in their group. It is such a fun challenge for kids – mine had so much fun and were asking to go back to next day!
Family tip: Check the age and height requirements before your visit so you can choose the courses that work for your kids.
Saturday: Fall Colors, Downtown Omaha & Vala’s Pumpkin Patch
Get ready for today – it’s filled with some iconic Omaha attractions and the Disneyland of pumpkin patches.
Start With Fall Coffee at Fig
Start your morning with coffee and pastries at Fig Coffee – they offer some really great seasonal flavors.
The best part of this coffee shop is its location. Grab your coffee and head to the Riverfront, where you can stroll along the water or over the bridge while sipping your drink.
Walk Across the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge
One of the most iconic ways to experience Omaha’s riverfront is by walking across the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge.
The bridge stretches across the Missouri River, connecting Omaha, Nebraska, with Council Bluffs, Iowa.
About halfway across the bridge, you’ll find the famous spot where you can stand with one foot in Nebraska and one foot in Iowa.
It’s become known as “Bobbing,” and yes, you absolutely need to take a family photo here!
Fall is an especially beautiful time to walk the bridge because you can see the changing leaves along the riverfront.
Make sure to look for OMAR the Troll, a giant public art installation located near the bridge on the Omaha side.
Let the Kids Play at The RiverFront
From the bridge, continue into The RiverFront, a revitalized downtown area that includes parks, walking paths, gardens, public art, and some seriously fun playgrounds.
Make sure to spend some time here – these playgrounds are so great!
Explore the Kiewit Luminarium
Next, head to the Kiewit Luminarium.
This is such a fun spot for both kids and adults.
Located along the riverfront, the Luminarium is an interactive science and exploration center designed around curiosity and hands-on discovery.
Give yourself a couple of hours here, especially if your kids love science, building, experimenting, or getting hands-on.
Have Lunch in the Old Market
After you finish at the RiverFront, head into Omaha’s historic Old Market.
The cobblestone streets, brick buildings, local shops, restaurants, and galleries make this one of my favorite areas of downtown Omaha to explore.
For lunch, we enjoyed Trini’s Mexican Restaurant, but there are tons of great spots here to pick from.
Grab a Fall Treat at Hollywood Candy
While you are in the area, hop into Hollywood Candy.
This enormous candy store is packed with nostalgic sweets, colorful treats, vintage memorabilia, and plenty of things that will make kids’ eyes light up.
During the fall, it’s a fun place to pick up some seasonal treats, and they go all out with Halloween decor.
Spend the Afternoon at Vala’s Pumpkin Patch
Now it’s time for the main event: Vala’s Pumpkin Patch & Apple Orchard.
If you’re visiting Omaha during the fall, this is an absolute must do.
This isn’t just a place to pick out a pumpkin.
It’s an entire fall experience.
You will easily spend several hours here exploring the pumpkin patch, visiting the animals, riding attractions, playing games, watching the live entertainment, and sampling all the fall treats.
The atmosphere is what makes Vala’s so special. The theming is over the top – there are pumpkins everywhere, hayrides, fall decorations, farm animals, seasonal treats, and plenty of activities designed specifically for families.
And because there is so much to do, I recommend treating Vala’s as an afternoon-and-evening destination rather than trying to squeeze it into an hour between other activities.
Sunday: Omaha Zoo
After a packed Saturday, Sunday is all about one of Omaha’s most beloved attractions.
Spend the Day at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium
You can’t visit Omaha with kids without spending some time at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium.
And when I say this place is big, I mean big.
This is not the kind of zoo you casually walk through in an hour or two.
Plan to spend most of the day here.
The zoo is home to an incredible variety of animals and immersive habitats, but what really makes it stand out is the way many of the exhibits are designed.
You’ll find indoor rainforests, a massive desert dome, huge aquarium exhibits, gorillas, big cats, elephants, and so much more.
My best tip is to look at the map before you arrive and decide which exhibits are your must-sees.
Otherwise, you can easily spend the entire day wandering and still leave with things you didn’t have time to see.
End the Weekend With Fall Ice Cream
Before heading home, make one final stop at Coneflower Creamery.
Coneflower is known for its handcrafted ice cream, and they offer some of the tastiest fall flavors to choose from.
Grab a scoop—or two—and enjoy one last treat before hitting the road.
Tips for Planning a Fall Weekend in Omaha With Kids
Check the fall schedules
Several of the activities on this itinerary are seasonal, particularly Vala’s Pumpkin Patch and the spooky experiences at TreeRush Adventures.
Dates and hours can change from year to year, so check the attraction’s current schedule before building your itinerary.
Dress in layers
Fall weather in Nebraska can be unpredictable.
Mornings can be chilly, afternoons can warm up considerably, and evenings can get cold again.
Layers will make your family much more comfortable, especially if you’re spending several hours outdoors.
Plan for more time at Vala’s Than You Think You Need
Don’t make the mistake of treating Vala’s as a quick stop.
There is enough to do there to fill an entire day, and you’ll enjoy it much more if you aren’t watching the clock.
Don’t underestimate the zoo
Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium deserves most of a day.
Wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and be prepared to walk.
Where to Stay in Omaha With Kids
For a weekend like this, I’d recommend staying somewhere downtown or near the riverfront.
That puts you close to the Old Market, Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge, The RiverFront, and Kiewit Luminarium, making Saturday especially easy.
My top recommendations:
- Hyatt Place Omaha Downtown – free breakfast, rooms that sleep 6 + indoor pool
- Embassy Suites – free breakfast, family rooms + indoor pool
- Hilton Garden Inn – indoor pool, family rooms + onsite dining
If the only attraction you’re planning to visit is Vala’s, staying farther west makes more sense.
My recommendation:
- Holiday Inn Express – free breakfast, close to Vala’s
Final Thoughts on a Fall Getaway in Omaha
Omaha is one of those Midwest cities that is easy to overlook when you’re planning a family getaway, but I think a fall in Omaha makes a pretty convincing case for adding it to your list.
You can start the weekend ziplining through a spooky forest, spend Saturday walking across a bridge between two states, exploring interactive exhibits, eating your way through the Old Market, and ending the day surrounded by thousands of pumpkins at one of the best fall attractions in the region.
Then Sunday brings a full day at one of the country’s best zoos before you finish with pumpkin ice cream.
It’s an itinerary that gives you a little bit of everything—outdoor adventure, fall activities, science, animals, great food, and plenty of opportunities for kids to just be kids.
If you’re looking for an easy fall getaway that doesn’t require a huge amount of planning or a long road trip, Omaha is a fantastic choice.
Just don’t forget your camera, your appetite, and probably a sweatshirt.
