There’s no better place to begin your weekend than Chickasaw National Recreation Area.

Known for its natural springs, swimming holes, scenic trails and abundant wildlife, this park offers the perfect introduction to the beauty and truly unique landscape of southern Oklahoma.

Start your visit at the Travertine Nature Center, where kids can learn about the park’s unique ecosystems and earn their Junior Ranger badges. The interactive exhibits make it a fun and educational stop, and it’s a great way to help your kiddos connect with the park’s history and landscape that they will spend the day exploring.

One of the highlights of any visit is spotting the park’s resident bison herd. These massive animals roam a designated section of the recreation area and provide an incredible opportunity to see one of America’s most iconic species up close.

If you’re visiting in the summer months, make sure to head to Little Niagara Falls. Fed by the park’s natural springs, this popular area features a crystal-clear and ice-cold swimming area with a shallow entry that’s perfect for families. It’s easy to see why this is one of the most beloved swimming spots in Oklahoma – I wasn’t sure if I was ever going to get my kids to leave!

After cooling off at Little Niagara, spend some time exploring the rest of the park. There truly is so much to see here! Veterans Lake offers peaceful walking paths and beautiful scenery, while the trails leading to Buffalo Springs and Antelope Springs showcase the natural beauty that makes this area so unique. Along the way, you’ll discover several additional springs, trails, overlooks and bridges.

Before wrapping up the afternoon, stop by Sweet Swirlz in downtown Sulphur for a well-earned treat. Whether you’re craving ice cream, a specialty drink, or something sweet after a day outside, it’s the perfect way to cool off.

Then take some time to wander through downtown Sulphur afterward. The area is filled with locally owned shops and small-town charm, making it the perfect afternoon activity.

For dinner, head to Boom-a-Rang Diner, a local favorite known for classic diner fare and a family-friendly atmosphere. Then check into the Treasure Valley Casino & Hotel, which is the perfect home base for your weekend of exploring.

Day 2: Culture, History, and Waterfall Adventures

Start your morning with coffee and probably the most delicious cinnamon roll I’ve ever eaten from Cup & Crumb.

Then head to the Chickasaw Cultural Center, one of the most impressive cultural attractions in Oklahoma. Even if you’ve visited museums before, this experience feels different.

The Chickasaw Cultural Center tells the story of the Chickasaw people through immersive exhibits, interactive displays, demonstrations, and historical interpretations. It’s easy to spend hours there exploring the museum galleries, learning about Chickasaw history, and walking through the recreated traditional village.

Make sure to catch a stomp dance demonstration – you will even get the chance to join in!

For lunch, enjoy a meal at Aaimpa’ Café, located within the cultural center. The menu features traditional Chickasaw-inspired dishes and provides a unique opportunity to experience flavors deeply connected to the region’s heritage.

Pro tip: Make sure to bring quarters to feed the fish and turtles at the pond!

After lunch, head to one of Oklahoma’s most famous attractions: Turner Falls Park.

Home to Oklahoma’s tallest waterfall, Turner Falls is one of those places that instantly feels like summer. You’ll spend the afternoon swimming beneath the falls, climbing through caves, exploring castles and discovering all the hidden corners of the park.

It’s the perfect combination of adventure, exploration, and relaxation, making it one of the most popular destinations in the state.

For dinner, make sure to head to Smokin’ Joe’s Rib Ranch. Known for hearty portions and their mouthwatering barbecue, it’s the perfect spot to refuel after a full day of adventure.

Day 3: Wildlife Encounters and Roadside Fun

Before heading home, grab breakfast from Arbuckle Mountain Fried Pies.

A longtime Oklahoma favorite, these fried pies have become something of a road trip tradition. With a variety of sweet and savory flavors available, you definitely want to arrive hungry. Our top pick was the apple pie, followed closely by cherry.

Next, take a drive through Arbuckle Wilderness, one of the most unique wildlife attractions in Oklahoma. This drive-through safari allows visitors to see animals from around the world, up close and personal, without ever leaving their vehicle.

From zebras and giraffes to bison and longhorn cattle, there’s so much excitement around every turn. Make sure to purchase extra food – feeding the animals is the best part!

On your way home, make a final stop in Pauls Valley to visit the Toy & Action Figure Museum.

This hidden gem houses one of the largest collections of toys and action figures in the country. Parents will enjoy the nostalgia of seeing their favorite childhood toys, while kids will love discovering thousands of colorful characters and collectibles.
